Bears
Published in Paperback by Altitude Publishing Ltd. (January, 1997)
Author: Kevin Van Tighem
Average review score:

Outstanding, up-to-date Natural History
Bears: Monarch's of the Northern Wilderness, by Wayne Lynch, is the best all-around natural history on bears; Van Tighem's book isn't quite as rich in natural history, but includes more practical information on safety in bear country, and environmental issues affecting bears. With spring black bear hunting a contentious issue in various parts of North America, so called "experts" writing for hook and bullet magazines have reassured readers that you don't have to worry about accidentally mistaking females for males, because cubs rarely leave their mother's side. Wrong. Van Tighem notes that a study near Canada's Riding Mountain National Park found that "when female black bears investigate bait stations, they usually leave their cubs behind."

This book is filled with well-documented facts about bears. It's well-written, too. It doesn't read like a boring scientific paper. Van Tighem touches on a lot of politically sensitive issues affecting bears but doesn't have a shrill voice at all; instead, he let's the facts speak for themselves. Excellent book.

Bears (First Discovery Book)

WHO LEFT THIS PAWPRINT?
.

If your child wants to take his interest in bears beyond that of the ubiquitous Pooh here is the ideal book.

This is a very classy and stylish publication. It gives us a portrayal of the lives of bears in the wild. It takes us into the real world, well beyond the saccharine confines inhabited by the average Teddy B.

All "First Discovery" series of children's books have transparent pages as their key feature. Every page is a treat. We see mother bear in her den, and when you turn the page you see her view of the wintry world outside. We see the polar bear with his nose down a hole in the ice. Turn the page and you can see him catching a seal.

Everybody loves Panda's. In this book you'll see mother Panda on one page, and when you turn the clear overlay, there is the cub suckling from mom. This is a gentle way for children to pick up some facts of life.

Hopefully this book will still be back in print. It certainly deserves to find a wider audience.

The Bears and I: Raising Three Cubs in the North Woods
Published in Paperback by Pan Macmillan (1975)
Author: Robert Franklin Leslie
Average review score:

Excellent non-fiction account of man & nature in Canada
I have read this book for the 5th time since I was about 8 years old. I am 36 and it has never lost its' grip on me. Leslie's first hand account of communing with bears in British Columbia's remote, yet not remote enough, North Woods is truly unforgettable. How this book became out of print, and never a movie or documentary defies explanation. Leslie's descriptive language and compelling narrative is a tribute to nature writers everywhere. Readers who like Farley Mowat and Robert Redford would like this book. I plan on passing this on to my 2 year old son as my mother passed it on to me whaen old enough to comprehend. Long live the bear!

The Bears of Paris
Published in Paperback by Word Works (01 January, 1996)
Author: Miles David Moore
Average review score:

New classics --poems that will endure
The Bears of Paris is a modern match for Dante's _Inferno_. The poems in this collection give us today's Man-in-the-city in the character of Fatslug dodging the slings and arrows of our fates, often pierced and wounded. Yet the poems reaffirm our essential humanity, the struggle to love and to be loved. While thoroughly rooted in our times, the poems also connect us with events from history, revealing the nature of suffering. Moore takes on the subject of evil and Man's inhumanity to man with Swiftian wit. Miles Moore has a deadly satiric eye for human failings, the interactions of daily life, intended and unintentional cruelties, and yet writes with much empathy of the consequent pain inflicted on the victims. Many of the poems such as "Two Men", "I love Barbie Taylor, T. Mc" and "Dead Boy in the Road at Fredericksburg" deserve to be included in anthologies of the best American poetry. "Dead Boy.." ends with this panoramic fade on the photograph from the Civil War: "Through the millenia the murdered march/ To someone else's tune and memory/ And through some other guy's triumphal arch./ You and they are no one. You're history./ Repeating rifles always bear repeating./ The silent beast that ate you keeps on eating."

This is a fascinating and satisfying collection with poetry that gives us much to ponder.
